About Falling Sand

Falling Sand is a cellular automaton sandbox where different materials — sand, water, oil, fire, smoke, plant seeds — follow physical rules for gravity, fluid dynamics, combustion, and growth, creating emergent behavior from the interactions between simple rules. Sand sinks through water but floats on oil; fire ignites plant matter and consumes oxygen; smoke rises while water flows downward. The creative experience comes from engineering systems of interacting materials that produce self-sustaining dynamic patterns — a genre that sits at the boundary between art creation, science exploration, and programming-like logical design without requiring coding knowledge.

How Falling Sand works: Select a material from the bottom row: Sand, Water, Wood, Stone, Lava, or Eraser. Click or drag on the canvas to place your selected material. Sand falls and accumulates; Water flows and fills containers; Solid materials stay in place. Pour water over sand to see sand sink through water (density simulation). Build creative scenes with different material interactions — just draw freely!

Falling Sand runs directly in your browser using modern HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript — no plugins, installations, or account registrations ever required. Touch-friendly controls provide a seamless experience on smartphones and tablets, while keyboard and mouse support gives desktop players precise control. Your scores and progress are automatically saved in your browser's local storage.
